When we first established Sun and Rain Works in the year 2005, we never imaged how the art business would evolve and grow. In the year 2007 we defined the 8 characteristics of Metaconceptual Art or Meta Art. Meta Art, or art about art, has grown from a simple idea into a complex framework for artistic expression. Through years of exploration and experimentation, we've discovered that Meta Art is not just about creating art that references other art – it's about understanding the very nature of artistic expression itself.
Our journey began with simple questions: What makes art, art ? How does art communicate with its audience ? What is art ? These fundamental inquiries led us on a path of discovery that continues to shape our artistic practice today.
The evolution of Meta Art has been marked by several key phases:
Early Explorations (2005-2008)
In these formative years, we focused on creating works that directly were wearable art painted on the canvas of t shirts, exploring the relationship between original and wearable interpretation. This period was characterized by experimental techniques and a growing understanding of art history's role in contemporary creation, experience, and understanding of art.
Conceptual Development (2007-2015)
As our practice matured, we began to explore deeper philosophical questions about the nature of art itself. This period saw the development of our core theoretical framework and the establishment of Meta Art as a distinct art movement in 2007.
Historical Firsts (2008-2009)
In 2008 we created the first ever Meta Art Exhibition at the Sotheby's Spring Photographs Auction March 30, 2009 in New York City, NY. This event showcased the first 2 live new original artworks created live and in real-time at Sotheby's auction. The art work "WTF is Ansel Adams" was the live auction happening and coordingation with Sun & Rain Works, and "WTF is art dot com" was the original website promoting Meta Art and this auction art work and Metaconceptual, or Meta Art.
Contemporary Integration (2015-Present)
Today, Meta Art has evolved into a comprehensive approach that bridges traditional and digital mediums, incorporating elements of both.
